Within the next couple of weeks, my wife and I will be celebrating our 15th Wedding Anniversary. It’s not that often that we go anywhere without the girls but with the help of RedLetterDays, I’d arranged a little secret treat.
The girls would be enjoying the afternoon with their grandparents while my wife and I headed off to the luxurious Ashdown Park Hotel for some Afternoon Tea.
Ashdown Park is just down the road from us but we’d never been there and this was going to be a wonderful treat for both of us and something we might never get to do again.
We arrived at the hotel an hour or so before we were meant to just so we could explore and enjoy our surrounds and time together.
Ashdown Park Hotel is surrounded by Ashdown Forest, and on the grounds, you’ll find a golf course, spa, tennis courts, gorgeous grounds to walk around and also the restaurant and hotel.
As soon as you pull up to the car park you can tell that this is an impressive building, full of history and character.
After our gentle stroll around the gardens, we headed into the main hotel and was led into a very grand looking room, full of paintings and comfortable armchairs ready to enjoy our afternoon tea. We were lucky enough to have received a voucher from RedLetterDays for this experience so we had the luxury of enjoying a Champagne Afternoon Tea.
Now we had no idea what was really involved in an afternoon tea let alone one involving champagne. Oh, we weren’t about to be disappointed.
Firstly the champagne came out with some yummy truffles, followed by a pot of tea. You could pick whichever flavour of tea you liked and we went for the classic breakfast tea. What followed after that can only be described as food heaven.
A perfectly presented tower of food, starting with a lower tier of sandwiches. One part for me and the other a selection of vegetarian sandwiches for my wife. From Smoked Scottish Salmon, Cucumber, Cream Cheese and Soft Herbs, Egg Mayonnaise with Mustard Cress and Honey Roasted Ham. All freshly made and the perfect size so you didn’t fill up before tier two.
Tier two is the scone plate, warm freshly baked served with Dorset Clotted Cream & Tip Tree Strawberry Preserve. Two were fruit and the other two were plain, it’s at this point I’d like to point out that I had never tasted a scone before…I know shocking!!
Well, I think my life has changed, the fruit scone with a good helping of the jam was amazing. Honestly at 36 and trying a scone for the first time, I didn’t know what I was missing. They were warm and the fruit one with the jam, no cream, was amazing. It went so well with the cup of tea we were enjoying.
The final tier was the one we were most looking forward to, the assortment of homemade cakes & pastries. We received a cream eclair, macarons and a wonderful chocolate and coffee layer cake. This finished the afternoon tea off perfectly with one final cup of breakfast tea.
The whole experience was simply amazing, the surrounds, the staff and the food. We couldn’t fault anything, would we do it again, oh without a doubt.
