The term shadowbanning has been around on Instagram for a good 6-9 months at this point. For those that are out of the loop, this is a phrase whereby Instagram can apply a setting to your account that means it is invisible to new followers. This means engagement and reach are greatly reduced. You still show up to current followers but it harms the growth of an account.Read More
It’s that horrible feeling when you see one of your photos being used on someone else’s account. I’ve had people use a few of my photos without consent, mainly a couple of flower photos or a landscape photo or two…thankfully never a photography of my children.
Most people are honest people and they’ll ask if they can use one of my photos or they can download a selection of my photos on my Unsplash account. These people give credit and you get a warm glowing feeling with the fact that people actually like your photos.Read More
A little while ago…possibly a year or so…a phrase kept popping up in Facebook groups and in blogging circles. The phrase was ‘pods’ or ‘Instagram pods’. Something up until that point I’d never heard about.Read More
Back once again with a roundup of some of the photo news, you might have missed from the past week.
Sony A9, Handmade 90mm Lens & Instagram Users | Photalife Friday Round Up
Sony Announces the A9
A new flagship model from Sony, this is the A9 and it's meant to be the best of the best. It's a full-frame E mount camera that really packs a punch. A high-speed 20 FPS, with 693 Auto Focus Points, 5 Axis in camera stabilisation and 4K full frame readout video.
All of this comes at a price and for this it's a cool £4,500. To find out more visit the Sony website.
Handmade 90mm f/2.8 Lens
Photographer Mats Wernersson has built his own 90mm f/2.8 lens from scratch. Pretty much every part was handmade apart from the mount and aperture blades. Have a watch of the video to see how he did it and the sample images. I was mighty impressed with the quality of photos, I couldn't see how much he spent making it but it was a lot cheaper than buying one.
Instagram Hits 700m Users
Instagram is growing, and not at a slow rate. The photo-sharing site has just passed 700m users and by the end of 2017 will possibly have hit 1 billion.
New features like stories, live, multiple posts it is growing faster than every. You can read more on the Instagram Blog.
This is a little round up of the photo news from this past week that I think you'll be interested in.
Drones, Instagram and a 16-Camera Camera | Photalife Friday Round Up
Drone Sales Exploded 117% in 2016
Even with various restrictions coming into place sales of Drones in the US is still growing at a massive rate. NPD reported that sales were up 117% in the 12 months leading up to February 2017.
The fastest selling drones were those priced $1,000+ which includes the DJI Phantom range.
I don't have the figures for the UK but I wonder if they're growing at such a rate...tell me in the comments do you have a drone?
Instagram Now Lets You Save and Organise Photos Into ‘Collections’
After the release on Instagram of their save feature they are now adding to it by allowing you to organise these into collections. In a kind of Pinterest style you will be able to have all your 'floral' or 'animal' saves in one place.
According to Instagram, 46% of users have used the save feature since launch in December. Having never used this feature I can't see it changing anything I do. To read more about it have a read of the Instagram Blog.
Final Design of Light L16 Camera
After 2 years in the pipeline, it would appear that the Light L16 is a step closer. This is the final design of the camera.
If you're unaware of what this is, it's a 16-camera camera, which will capture 52MP images.
From the close up you see that the camera uses 6 x 150mm f/2.4 telephoto lenses, 5 x 70mm f/2 midrange lenses, and 5 x 28mm f/2 wide-angle lenses. This camera raised over $30million in crowdfunding and the company are currently working on building cameras to fulfil their pre-orders.
They hope to be able to take new orders in late 2017...but remember the pre-order price was $1,699 so it's now a cheap piece of kit.
You can read more on the LightRumours site.
The latest updates from Instagram
Today Instagram announced a couple of new updates these include the fact you'll be able to use live video on your Instagram Stories. This is a step in the same direction that Facebook has taken with it's live feed.
Today we’re announcing two updates: live video on Instagram Stories and disappearing photos and videos for groups and friends in Instagram Direct. Live video on Instagram Stories helps you connect with your friends and followers right now. It’s easy to go live — just swipe right from feed to open the camera, tap the “Start Live Video” button and start sharing for up to an hour. Your friends may get a notification when you go live so they can tune in. While you’re live, you can pin a comment for everyone to see or turn comments off altogether. When you’re done, your live story immediately disappears from the app so you can feel more comfortable sharing anything, anytime. When someone you follow starts a live video, you’ll see “Live” under their profile photo in the stories bar. During the broadcast, you can comment and like as much as you want. You can also discover new live videos on Explore. Tap “Top Live” to see exciting live videos happening at that moment. Live video on Instagram Stories and Explore will be rolling out globally over the next few weeks. You can learn more about today’s updates at help.instagram.com.
Also announced lately from Instagram is that you can tag people in your stories...just simply use the text and add @ to the beginning to start tagging someone.
Today, we’re introducing a few new tools to help you make your story even more fun: Boomerang and mentions. We’re also starting to test links inside some stories. Boomerang lets you turn everyday moments into something fun and unexpected. Now you can easily take a Boomerang right inside Instagram. Swipe right from your feed to open the stories camera. A new format picker under the record button lets you select “Boomerang” mode. You can also now share who you’re with or who you’re thinking of by mentioning them in your story. When you add text to your story, type “@” followed by a username and select the person you’d like to mention. Their username will appear underlined in your story. And when someone taps the mention, they'll see a pop-up that takes them to that profile. You may begin to spot “See More” links at the bottom of some stories. This is a test that lets verified accounts add links so it’s easy to learn more. From your favorite chefs’ recipes to articles from top journalists or concert dates from the musicians you love, tap “See More” or swipe up to view the link right inside the app. To learn more about today’s updates, check out help.instagram.com. These updates for Instagram Stories are available as part of Instagram version 9.7 available for iOS in the Apple App Store, for Android in Google Play and for Windows 10 in the Windows Store.
The final update which is only available to a select group of brands is that they can tag products in their photos and link to product pages online.
For more updates on Instagram keep an eye on their blog.
Quick Tips: Never Miss a Social Media Update
This is a quick video to show you ways to turn notifications on for your favourite social media accounts.
I'll show you how to do this on mobile for Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube so you don't miss the important things.
Before the Summer arrived I had been coming up with a theme each week for people to use on Instagram. Then things got busy and it slowly slipped my mind and I stopped doing this.
What better time to start than at the beginning of the month? The difference this time is I will announce all the themes for the month in one go. I will still collate my favourite photos from the week but at least everyone will know the themes in advance.
Here are the themes for September so tag away the photos that fit the theme and I will look forward to seeing them.
The theme for Instagram was #PhotalifeCHILDREN and judging by all the photos it was a popular theme. It was difficult to pick my favourite four photos to show people.
My favourite photo from my collection was this one.
• Princesses • That moment when your daughter is left speechless when she meets Snow White. #PhotalifeCHILDREN #disney #disneyland #disneylandparis #disneyland #disneyworld #disneygram #instadisney #waltdisney #disneyparks #disneylove #SnowWhite #disneymagic #disneylife #family #children #disneyig #disneyphoto #DisneyPrincess #kids #daughters #family #teaminstaparent #kidsofinstagram #Princess
Now it's time to pick the four photos to show, I've picked a few from different people in the hope you'll discover new accounts to enjoy.
Aw. He really is a little sweetie. But not yesterday when he told me he hated tennis, hated sports day and wouldn't do it unless he was in his usual yellow house. He and his friend have been switched because there's too many yellow in his year. Even being in green with his cousins isn't making him happy #photalifechildren
This week's theme to join in with is #PhotalifeWATER, make of that what you will. Sea? River? Drink? It's completely up to you.
I confess last week's Instagram theme of #PhotalifeFUN was picked because we knew we'd be at Disney so it seemed the perfect week to use it.
My personal favourite photo from the week is of course from Disney and it's this one as it signalled the start of our adventure.
• Let the fun begin • Not quite so wet this morning, breakfast first and then fun fun fun #disney #disneyland #disneylandparis #disneyland #disneyworld #disneygram #PhotalifeFun #instadisney #waltdisney #disneyparks #disneylove #Paris #disneymagic #disneylife #family #children #disneyig #disneyphoto #BrightonDad #kids #daughters #family #teaminstaparent #kidsofinstagram
I loved seeing other peoples take on the FUN theme and these are my favourites from the week.
This week's theme is Black & White so please tag your photos with #PhotalifeB_W and I look forward to seeing what people come up with.
