Back in 1895, the first slot machine was created by a Californian man named Charles Fey. They can now be found online over at the likes of Slots Baby, but let's first take a look back in time to where it all began. Fey was a mechanic who liked to create new things and one day in 1895, he made the world’s first slot machine which was known as the Liberty Bell.
The Liberty Bell was a 3-reel slot machine with playing card symbols. On each reel, there was also a symbol of a golden Liberty Bell. The game was pretty simple and was played by pulling the lever at the side of the machine. Pulling the lever triggered the reels to spin. The reels would spin until they came to a stop and if 3 golden Liberty Bells lined up, the player won 50 cents. The Liberty Bell quickly became very popular.
Improvements in slot machine technology
As technology advanced, so did the traditional slot machines. The first electromechanical slot machines were created in the 1960s with the most popular being Bally’s “Money Honey”. In the 1980s technology improved and slot machines were now powered by electric microprocessors.
These slots allowed bigger bets to be placed which of course meant there was bigger payouts. The popularity of slot machines continued to grow and a slot machine could now be seen in almost every pub and leisure club in the world.
When the Random Number Generator was introduced, the slot machines’ popularity grew even more. A Random Number Generator is a device which creates a sequence of numbers or symbols that cannot be predicted and happens by chance. With this new program, slot machines could be operated by just pressing a button.
This technology was great for manufacturers as they were now able to make slot machines with every type of theme with various paylines. The Random Number Generator also allowed progressive jackpot slot machines to be developed. These were really exciting as the jackpot continues to grow as people play until someone eventually wins a huge sum of money.
